Jos Buttler, the dynamic England batter, and South Africa’s fast bowler, Gerald Coetzee, were the only two overseas players from the Gujarat Titans squad who had left India when the IPL was temporarily suspended on May 9. This suspension occurred due to growing cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.
However, the remaining overseas players—Rashid Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, Kagiso Rabada, and Karim Janat—stayed with the squad in India.
Rutherford's Availability and Buttler's Concerns
While Buttler is set to rejoin the squad, Sherfane Rutherford will miss the playoffs. Rutherford had already been named in the West Indies’ ODI squad for their series in England, which runs from May 29 to June 3—coinciding with the IPL playoffs.
Buttler, also named in England’s white-ball squads, faces a similar challenge, with the possibility of missing the IPL playoffs. An ECB spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday:
“We’re keen to support the IPL and the BCCI in getting the schedule up and running, and to facilitate players’ return should they choose to go back.”
