Pakistan 15 Man Champions Trophy Squad
The Pakistan 15-Man Champions Trophy Squad has been officially confirmed, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) deciding to stick with its original selection despite widespread scrutiny. The final squad announcement clarifies doubts over player fitness and reaffirms the team’s strategy ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
After reviewing the squad due to concerns about player selections, the PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the selection committee have opted not to make any last-minute alterations. The deadline set by the ICC technical committee for squad changes has now passed, meaning these 15 players will represent Pakistan in the high-stakes tournament.
Several former cricketers and analysts criticized the squad for having just one specialist opener and one frontline spinner (Abrar Ahmed). However, Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan has defended the squad, emphasizing that the team’s strength lies in its fast-bowling attack, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf.
The selectors have provided reassurance regarding Haris Rauf’s fitness, who sustained a muscle injury in a recent tri-series against New Zealand. Although he was ruled out of the remaining matches of that series, the PCB has confirmed that Rauf is expected to regain full fitness before Pakistan’s Champions Trophy 2025 opener against New Zealand on February 19.
“His injury is not serious, and he is undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of our medical staff,” a PCB official stated. “He has been advised to rest, but we are confident he will be ready for the tournament.”
Pakistan suffered a setback when in-form opener Saim Ayub was ruled out of action for 10 weeks following an ankle injury sustained in the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town. His absence leaves Pakistan with limited opening options, but the selectors have decided against making additional changes.
Pakistan is expected to rely on its world-class pace attack, spearheaded by Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah. With their matches being played in Pakistan stadiums, the team will look to maximize home advantage by utilizing fast-bowling-friendly conditions.
The inclusion of all-rounders like Faheem Ashraf and spin specialist Abrar Ahmed gives Pakistan some depth, but questions remain over their middle order. With Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, and Mohammad Rizwan forming the batting core, the team will aim to build stability and post competitive totals.
