Multan Cricket Stadium
The Multan Cricket Stadium, located on Vehari Road in the outskirts of Multan, Punjab, is a multi-purpose venue owned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). It is the home ground for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) team, Multan Sultans. The Multan Cricket Stadium can hold 30,000 fans. This makes it one of the most important cricket stadiums in the country.
The cricket ground hosted its inaugural Test match in August 2001, when Pakistan played against Bangladesh in the 2001-02 Asian Test Championship. Equipped with floodlights, the venue is also capable of hosting day-night matches.
Established in 2001, the Multan Cricket Stadium was built as a modern replacement for the IBN-E-QASIM Bagh Stadium, which was located in central Multan. The stadium hosted its first Test match in August 2001, featuring a clash between Pakistan and Bangladesh. Two years later, on September 9, 2003, it staged its first One Day International (ODI) between the same teams.
To accommodate day-night fixtures, floodlights were installed at the venue. The stadium’s first-ever day/night match took place on February 16, 2006, featuring a high-stakes encounter between arch-rivals Pakistan and India.
In April 2018, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced renovation plans for the Multan Cricket Stadium, along with other venues, to prepare them for international matches and Pakistan Super League (PSL) fixtures.
The stadium made its PSL debut on February 26, 2020, when the Multan Sultans faced Peshawar Zalmi. During the 2020 edition of PSL, the venue hosted a total of three matches. In the 2023 PSL season, Multan Cricket Stadium hosted five matches, including the opening game between Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans.
After a 14 year hiatus, international cricket returned to Multan when the stadium hosted a three-match ODI series against the West Indies in June 2022. The first match was played on June 8, 2022. Later that year, in December 2022, Multan was chosen as one of the venues for England’s Test tour of Pakistan.
On August 30, 2023, the Asia Cup kicked off in Multan with a spectacular opening ceremony, featuring performances by Nepali singer Trishala Guru and Pakistani artist Aima Baig. The tournament opener saw Pakistan take on Nepal, marking the country’s first Asia Cup hosting in 15 years.
The Multan Cricket Stadium is one of several international cricket stadiums in Pakistan. With its modern facilities and Multan Stadium enclosures, it stands among the largest cricket stadiums in Pakistan. Pakistan has numerous cricket grounds, but Multan International Cricket Stadium is one of the few capable of hosting day-night international matches.
Pakistan is home to many cricket stadiums, with venues such as the National Cricket Ground in Karachi and Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore among the most famous. The Multan Cricket Stadium pitch report highlights its balanced surface, making it suitable for both batsmen and bowlers. It remains a key venue in Pakistan’s cricketing landscape, contributing to the nation’s rich cricketing history.
The question of how many cricket stadiums are in Pakistan is often asked by fans. The country boasts several top-tier venues, including the biggest cricket stadium in Pakistan, which is located in Karachi. With the ongoing development of Pakistan cricket stadiums, Multan Cricket Stadium photos continue to showcase the venue’s top class facilities and state of the art infrastructure.
